PERSONAL PREPAREDNESS … is there more to it?
With the recent impact of Hurricane Katrina and the lingering memory of 9/11, we seem to be getting ever-stronger messages about the need for personal preparedness. We’ve long been advised to build up food storage and now 72-hour kits are also strongly recommended.
Yet, there is something more to personal preparedness. At least, there should be. It is another subtle yet vital dimension; one that surely can provide help in a storm or terrorist event but also great peace of mind in today’s busy times.
Perhaps a couple of clues will help. Remember the sad Terri Schiavo saga? Or, how many times have you heard of an acquaintance who left for work or a vacation and instead ended up in intensive care…or worse?
Personal preparedness needs to include the organization of one’s personal affairs as well as the more tangible items. Things like having a living will or health care directive in place. How about a complete record of all important documents, emergency contacts, insurance and other vital records all in one place, safe from fire, theft or other disasters and available 24/7 to those who need it?
